Telling a child that someone has passed away

That has to be the hardest thing that you have to do. I got a text from my kids dad last night that his mom passed away. My kids are still young so they really spend a lot of time with their grandmother. He could not figure out how to tell them and honestly I didnt know how either. I just figured that it was the least I could for him and her. She was a wonderful person and will be missed greatly. I told them tonight and I have to say it was the hardest thing for me to try and be strong for them. Of course they instantly cry and want to call their dad. To watch their faces so sad and hurt just broke my heart. Especially my seven year old, she is young and was close to her grandmother. They went to bed sad with encouraging words from me that everything will be okay and to keep her memories with them. I was not going to tell them today, but the one thing that helped me decide was I stepped outside earlier this evening and the biggest rainbow was in the sky. It gave me piece of mind that I could tell them and she was giving me the okay that everything would be okay. I am not sure if I believe in those signs or dont but it was exactly how I felt looking at it. That she was brightening up the gloomy sky with her smile. It is hard enough to lose someone you love, but to have to tell children they have lost someone to me is harder. If you have had to tell your kids the same thing, I would love to hear your comments and how you dealt with it. Pin It

  1. I was on the receiving end of that conversation as a child. My mother passed away suddenly when I was six years old. I'll never forget the words my dad used to tell me she was not coming home from the hospital. He said "Patti, Mommy's gone to be with Papa". Well...I knew Papa was in heaven with Jesus....so thats all it took.
    I think it's never easy to tell children. They live in such a world of hope and expectations that everything will always be just the way it is today...with all the people in it. The other amazing thing though...is that kids are amazingly resilient...and before you know it you'll hear comforting words coming from their little mouths to heal your heart. Simply amazing.

    Peace&Joy,
    Patti =)
